Ferrous

Iron-based scrap metal (steel, cast iron, HMS, shredded auto bodies) — magnetic, lower value per pound than nonferrous but moved in much larger volumes.

## What is ferrous scrap?

**Ferrous** means iron-containing. In a scrap yard, ferrous covers everything magnetic — sheet steel, structural beams, cast iron, prepared HMS, shredded auto bodies (#1 and #2 HMS), busheling, P&S (Plate & Structural), and rebar.

## Grading

Ferrous is priced by **ISRI grade** (see *ISRI Grades*) and quoted per gross ton (2,240 lb), net ton (2,000 lb), or metric ton (1,000 kg) depending on the mill.

## Why it matters operationally

- Ferrous moves in **truckload and rail-car volumes** — accurate scale tickets matter more than fast cycle time.
- Most yards run a **ferrous side** (rolloffs, balers, shears) and a **nonferrous side** (sorting tables, scales, eddy currents) as separate workflows.

## How WeighPay handles ferrous

Ferrous loads can be ticketed by gross/tare/net with auto-deductions for moisture or contamination, priced per ton in any unit, and shipped to mills via auto-generated BOLs.
