NMFC (National Motor Freight Classification)

The standardized freight-class catalog used by LTL carriers in North America to price every shipment by density, stowability, handling, and liability.

## What is the NMFC?

The **National Motor Freight Classification** is a publication of the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) that assigns every commodity an **NMFC item number** and one of 18 **freight classes** (50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 77.5, 85, 92.5, 100, 110, 125, 150, 175, 200, 250, 300, 400, 500).

## Why scrap operators care

- Outbound loads to mills travel under an NMFC class.
- Wrong class = re-class charge from the carrier.
- Scrap-metal classes commonly used: **NMFC 102240** (iron or steel scrap), various subitems.

## How WeighPay handles NMFC

WeighPay's BOL/BOL-eMERGE printout includes NMFC item number and class automatically based on the load's material code.
